Jay's hunting career began at the ripe age of 7 when he killed his first animal, a gray squirrel, in a neighbor's backyard with his trusty Crosman 760 air rifle. It was a great shot! After proudly carrying home his trophy and displaying it to the neighbors, Jay soon got his first lesson in respect for game laws from his father, as he had killed the squirrel in May. An interest in the outdoors was born! Jay went on to further his education in the outdoors, earning a BS in Environmental Biology. While in school, class mates introduced him to the wonderful world of waterfowling. The never-ending dance of deceiving waterfowl by call and decoy holds an annual appeal for him, taking him on hunts everywhere from the swamps of the Deep South to the open waters of North Carolina's bountiful Sounds or to the wide-open Canadian Prairie.

Alongside a passion for waterfowling, an interest in retrievers developed, and Jay has trained and handled dogs in events such as AKC Field Trials and Hunt Tests, UKC Hunt Tests, and the Super Retriever Series. Training on a regular basis for these events, Jay has field tested many Avery Sporting Dog prototypes, and is looking forward to developing and bringing more and better Avery products to market. He is extremely lucky to have a loving wife, Jenna that supports him in all his endeavors. Along with competing in all types of Retriever competitions, Jay enjoys offshore and inshore fishing.
